Skin Mole Being Inspected By Doctor

Moles (melanocytic naevi) are clusters of melanocytes, melanin-producing cells typically found in the bottom layer of the skin’s epidermis and other places. They are darker than the surrounding skin because of the melanin.

Moles vary in appearance and size — smooth, bumpy, flat, protruding or hairy — but are typically circular with neat edges. In general, a mole’s size will be under a quarter inch in diameter.

Are Moles Environmental or Genetic, and Why Do They Suddenly Appear?

Most cases are thought to result from a combination of hereditary predisposition and sun exposure. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during pregnancy, are also common triggers for developing new moles.

Moles tend to appear in young people and evolve in size and pigmentation with age. However, the older we get, the rarer and more suspicious new moles become. The emergence of a new mole in an adult over 30 could indicate the presence of malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

Most moles are benign (not cancerous and harmless). Nevertheless, you should monitor your moles regularly or have an Atlanta Mole Removal Professional at Medical Dermatology Specialists examine them periodically. If a mole is cancerous and caught early enough, you have a 100% chance of survival.

When Should You Be Concerned About a Mole?

Changes in mole appearance are common with time. Sun exposure and hormonal shifts can cause changes in pigmentation (darkening or lightening) or shape (flattening or raising).

You need not be concerned unless the mole undergoes a dramatic change quickly. If it develops fuzzy edges, contains varying shades of brown, enlarges, itches, bleeds, swells or becomes crusty, it is time to see a board-certified dermatologist like Dr. Jamie Weisman.

What Happens if Your Mole is a Cause for Concern?

We know it is difficult to check your moles yourself. Hence, our skincare experts can perform a full-body exam to screen all of your moles for skin cancer. If we suspect melanoma, we suggest removing the mole and a 2 mm margin around it — a minor surgery known as an excision biopsy.

We use the latest research and techniques to treat skin conditions, including removing cancerous or pre-cancerous moles. When it comes to mole removal and anything else skin-related, you can put your trust in Medical Dermatology Specialists. Contact us to schedule an appointment today.

Our Patient Reviews

Dr. Weisman was very professional, friendly, and engaged in conversation with terminology I would understand. Her beside manner was, quite frankly, surprising! It was one of the most comfortable visits I've ever experienced with a doctor.

I truly cannot express how thankful I am for this practice. I have been treated with kindness and immense care by every staff member I have encountered here. The nurses and assistants are beyond attentive and genuinely care for the patient. I have just received a treatment plan from Dr. Laura Biehl, and even if this particular treatment plan doesn't provide me relief, I am confident that Dr. Biehl will work to figure out a solution. She is extremely knowledgeable, listens to patient concerns, and takes time to answer patient questions. Dr. Biehl, and this practice are true gems. If you have any dermatological issues this practice is absolutely the best of the best.
