Erythema Multiforme

Seeing a child’s skin covered in a horrible rash can completely terrify any parent or guardian. Erythema Multiforme is a rash unlike any rash most people have ever seen before. It is a hypersensitive reaction to an infection or medication. Erythema multiforme has a distinct appearance when the rash is starting because the reaction causes red, “bulls-eye” patches or sores on the skin. Often, the skin rash can spread to large areas of the body, even covering the entire back and/or torso. The rash typically begins on the extremities – the feet, legs, arms, and hands – but it can also affect the face, neck, inside of the mouth, and severe cases can affect the entire body. Erythema multiforme usually develops very quickly, which is often very scary to parents especially because most have never heard of this condition.

This rash can last anywhere from two to six weeks. One of the characteristics of Erythema Multiforme is that it develops as a symmetrical rash. So if a child or adult gets the rash on one leg, it will probably develop on the other. The rash can be very itchy and burn, causing children especially extreme discomfort.
