Molluscum Contagiosum is a viral infection that causes a mild skin rash. The rash is distinguishable because it looks like a group of wart-like bumps (called Mollusca) that are typically pink, white, or skin colored. Molluscum contagiosum is a common skin rash in kids, though many parents have never heard of it. Many parents bring their children in to the dermatologist out of fear that something is wrong, but for most children, the rash is no big deal and will eventually go away on its own. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, Dr. Jamie Weisman and her staff help children and parents find ways to deal with this pediatric skin rash, and they are dedicated to offering the most professional level of services to even the youngest of patients.

Molluscum contagiosum is caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV), and as its name suggests it is highly contagious. Infection occurs when the virus enters a small break in the skin’s surface. Many people have immunity to the virus and do not develop any growths. However, those who are not resistant to the virus will usually develop the skin rash two to eight weeks after infection. Molluscum contagiosum can also be spread from one part of the body to another by scratching or rubbing the bumps and then touching another part of the body.

In many cases, molluscum contagiosum is left alone and will go away on its own without treatment. However, it can take up to four years for the virus to disappear completely, and many parents and children do not want to deal with this infection for that long. There are different methods for removing the rash, although they can be painful and/or discolor or scar the skin.

Dr. Weisman is here to answer any questions that you may have regarding this skin infection. If you wish to start treatment, it works best when started early because there are usually only a few growths. If you do not wish to have the virus treated and want to allow it to run its course, we at Medical Dermatology Specialists will partner with you and your child to help prevent spreading and any unwanted side effects from the virus.

Our Patient Reviews

Dr. Weisman was very professional, friendly, and engaged in conversation with terminology I would understand. Her beside manner was, quite frankly, surprising! It was one of the most comfortable visits I've ever experienced with a doctor.

I truly cannot express how thankful I am for this practice. I have been treated with kindness and immense care by every staff member I have encountered here. The nurses and assistants are beyond attentive and genuinely care for the patient. I have just received a treatment plan from Dr. Laura Biehl, and even if this particular treatment plan doesn't provide me relief, I am confident that Dr. Biehl will work to figure out a solution. She is extremely knowledgeable, listens to patient concerns, and takes time to answer patient questions. Dr. Biehl, and this practice are true gems. If you have any dermatological issues this practice is absolutely the best of the best.
