Whether it is wrinkles, sagging eyelids or acne scars – most people throughout the world have something they do not like about their facial skin. Perhaps one of the most common among women who hit their thirties is the development of skin discoloration. Drastic changes in hormonal levels during pregnancy can be directly linked to skin discoloration known as melasma, but sun exposure, scarring, and other hormonal changes are also culprits of this skin condition. At Medical Dermatology Specialists in Atlanta, Georgia, we understand how this specific skin condition can cause you to feel uncomfortable in your own skin. Our unique dermatology practice takes the time to fully understand your skin discoloration and provide the most optimal treatment plan to promote healthy and beautiful skin that you feel confident in.

Skin discoloration known as Hyperpigmentation, is a condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the surrounding skin. The face and hands are the most common areas for this discoloration to occur, and when it does affect the face it can cause people to feel very self-conscious. Age spots occur due to the sun’s damaging effects on the skin, and are typically found on places of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun. Melasma spots are similar to age spots but are larger areas that are a result of hormonal changes. While many women find that their melasma disappears a few months after giving birth, other women find that the condition remains. This is especially true for those women who developed melasma during pregnancy and then have multiple children; the condition often worsens as the hormonal changes occur again and again. That is not to say that having multiple children is a bad thing – sometimes it just brings forth unexpected changes. Freckles are other darker skin spots that tend to become darker and more pronounced with sun exposure. The melanin in the skin absorbs the energy of the sun’s harmful UV rays and darkens the skin areas that are already hyper-pigmented.

While sunscreen is an absolute necessity to protect the skin from sun damage, it is often not enough to protect against skin discoloration in those who are prone to it. Dr. Jamie Weisman at Medical Dermatology Specialists is dedicated to helping you find the treatment you need to feel confident again.

Our Patient Reviews

Dr. Weisman was very professional, friendly, and engaged in conversation with terminology I would understand. Her beside manner was, quite frankly, surprising! It was one of the most comfortable visits I've ever experienced with a doctor.

I truly cannot express how thankful I am for this practice. I have been treated with kindness and immense care by every staff member I have encountered here. The nurses and assistants are beyond attentive and genuinely care for the patient. I have just received a treatment plan from Dr. Laura Biehl, and even if this particular treatment plan doesn't provide me relief, I am confident that Dr. Biehl will work to figure out a solution. She is extremely knowledgeable, listens to patient concerns, and takes time to answer patient questions. Dr. Biehl, and this practice are true gems. If you have any dermatological issues this practice is absolutely the best of the best.
