A skin tag is a small tag of skin that hangs off of the main surface layer of a person’s skin. They can appear on any part of the body, but most typically occur in areas where skin rubs against skin. Common areas are under the breasts, armpits, neck, eyelids, groin, and upper chest area. Skin tags are distinctively benign (non cancerous) tumors of the skin that cause no symptoms. They do not require removal, although some people wish to have them removed because of aesthetics or irritation. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, Dr. Jamie Weisman and her staff offer in office treatments for removal of skin tags.
Large skin tags are known to burst under pressure, but most skin tags do not cause symptoms on their own. Skin tags can become bothersome when repeatedly scratched or rubbed. This can happen with clothing, jewelry, or when shaving. With careful attention, irritation can be avoided. However, many people find that avoiding skin tags when they are shaving or wearing jewelry is hard to do. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, we offer the safest and most effective techniques for removing bothersome skin tags.
There are a few treatment methods for removing skin tags that can be done in our office. Freezing the skin tag with liquid nitrogen is one of the most common removal treatments. It is a painless and quick way of taking off a skin tag. Electrically burning off the skin tag or surgically removing it are also effective methods for larger skin tags. If you have one or more skin tags that are bothering your vision, are irritating you when wearing jewelry or clothing, call Medical Dermatology Specialists for an appointment to have your skin tag(s) removed.
