Squamous cell carcinoma is a common form of skin cancer that is usually not life threatening. It develops in the thin, flat squamous cells that make up the outer layer of the skin. Most cases of squamous cell carcinoma results from prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or from tanning beds.

Signs of squamous cell carcinoma include a flat sore with a scaly crust; a firm, red nodule; a new sore that develops on an old scar.
