Many people come into the dermatologist’s office with complaints that seem unrelated. They are embarrassed by two symptoms, not knowing that there could be a connection between them. Dandruff and acne are both conditions in which overactive oil glands in the skin are the contributing factors. Both conditions are also impacted by an overgrowth of bacteria, which leads to the questions of what is the connection between dandruff and acne?
An excess amount of surface oil produced by overactive sebaceous glands is thought to be the main culprit behind both dandruff and acne. While some people who have oily skin do not have either acne or dandruff, a reduction in the amount of oil produced by the skin’s glands is known to help control both conditions in those who suffer from dandruff and acne.
When excess oil on the skin and scalp mix with the skin’s dead cells as they are shed, these materials clog hair follicles and pores. Clogged pores increase with bacteria and produce inflamed pimples, cysts, and blackheads associated with acne, as well as the white flakes seen in dandruff.
Another common link between dandruff and acne is the abnormal shedding of dead skin cells. People who shed dead skin cells faster than usual and those whose skin’s outer layer tend to develop a thicker than normal consistency can have a more difficult time for oil and impurities to pass through the pore completely. Thus, clogged pores are a result of atypical shedding of the skin.
