Whether you are born with them or they show up later in life, it is important to watch the moles on your skin. Moles are small, hyperpigmented spots on the skin that are generally harmless. Most people have several moles on their bodies, and they can develop anywhere on the body. Moles can be a variety of colors with the most common being brown, black, tan, red, pink, or even blue. While most moles are innocent, it is important to monitor the moles on your skin as an important step in detecting anything worrisome.
Dermatologists have devised a simple acronym to help people keep an eye out for changes in moles that may indicate that something serious is going on. The ABCDE guide below can help you determine if you have a mole that needs to be checked out.
- A – Asymmetrical shape. A mole in which one half does not look like the other half.
- B – Border. A mole with an irregular, scalloped, or uneven border.
- C – Color. A mole that has changed color, is uneven in color, or that does not have a consistent color.
- D – Diameter. A mole that is larger than ¼ inch, especially if the mole is a new growth.
- E – Evolving. Moles that evolve (or change) in size, color, shape, or height. Moles may also evolve with new symptoms such as itchiness or bleeding.
This simple guide can help you stay alert to any concerns that you may experience over time. Remember, most moles are harmless – and even some that people worry about often turn out to be merely a nuisance. However, it is always important to have any suspicious mole or spot on your skin checked out by a doctor.
