As infants, eczema of the scalp is typically referred to as “cradle cap,” and pediatricians are very upbeat with parents and assure them that with olive oil or baby oil that the scaly spots will go away. While infants and babies have the cuteness factor working for them so that their eczema doesn’t cause their parents to be worried, in adults it can be a much more burdensome condition. One of the most common places for eczema to develop is on the scalp, and its unwelcome symptom is dandruff. Dandruff can cause many adults to feel self-conscious and be uncomfortable in public situations. This is especially true when wearing dark clothing where dandruff flakes are extremely visible. At Medical Dermatology Specialists, Dr. Jamie Weisman offers her knowledge and experience to help adults who suffer from eczema of the scalp so that they can enjoy life.

Eczema of the scalp is characterized by skin patches that can be:

  • Red and scaly
  • Very itchy
  • Flaky
  • Producing blisters
  • Oozing

Treatments for eczema of the scalp vary from patient to patient. Some people find that a medicated dandruff shampoo is extremely effective at healing the scalp’s dry areas and taking the itching sensation away. These shampoos have chemical ingredients including zinc pyrithione, ketoconazole, and salicylic acid to ease the inflammation and get rid of the flaky, scaly skin. Typically these shampoos are only needed two to three times per week. However, for those who do not find relief from these medicated shampoos, Dr. Weisman will work to determine if a topical cream or ointment will have a better response to calm the irritation and stop the flaking. Dr. Weisman is dedicated to helping her patients find relief because she understands that dandruff can have negative effects on a person’s ability in personal and professional situations. She will work to help define the exact cause of each patient’s eczema to get the scalp eczema under control.
