Safeguarding Your College Student’s Skin

Are you preparing your child to head off to college this fall? If so, you most likely have an extensive list of “to-dos” before the dreaded drop off day arrives. Medical Dermatology Specialists, Inc. would like to help you send your student off with confidence by helping you prepare your child to combat some common skin issues that occur in college.

Ringworm

Ringworm is a contagious fungal infection that occurs on the top layer of the skin. It is easily spread from human to human or object to human. Prepare your college student to combat the spread of ringworm by avoiding using shared objects such as clothing, towels, bedding, combs, and brushes with a roommate or other dorm mates.

Plantar Warts

Plantar warts look like small, skin-colored bumps with little black dots. It can be a single bump, or a cluster in an area. They are typically on the soles of your feet or palms of your hands. Plantar warts can be contracted by walking barefoot in areas that are warm and moist (like dorm communal bathrooms). Be sure to purchase a pair of shower shoes for your college student to help combat the development of a plantar wart.

Hives

Hives are red welts that swell on the surface of your skin. They can also itch, burn, or hurt. They are often as a result of an allergic reaction, but other times they can appear due to extreme weather, sweat, or stress. College is a stressful time and can trigger unexpected hives in your college student. Discuss this issue with your college student and make sure there is a plan to de-stress by walking outdoors, taking breaks, or delegating some tasks.
